Daniel Okafor

Daniel focuses on the passages people reach for when life gets heavy: fear, anxiety, and the search for strength that lasts. He cares about clear, grounded writing that takes a reader's struggle seriously without rushing to tidy answers. When he is not editing, he is usually collecting verses that have carried other people through.

Daniel grew up in a Nigerian-American home where scripture was read out loud at the kitchen table and friendly arguments about it were a kind of love language. He has studied the Bible closely ever since, especially the parts people tend to skip when life is going well. For several years he volunteered visiting patients at a local hospital through his church, and those rooms taught him more than any book. What helps most in a hard season, he learned there, is something true to hold onto. He edits every piece with one question in mind: would this still help someone on their worst day?

Lives in Houston, Texas, with more houseplants than he can reasonably keep alive.

Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. I will help you.

Isaiah 41:10

A few things about Daniel

  • Has filled three notebooks with verses friends leaned on in hard times.
  • Reads the book of Job at least once a year, usually in a cold January week.
  • Makes a serious plate of jollof rice and will happily argue that his is the best in Texas.
  • Coaches his nephew's middle-school basketball team and takes it slightly too seriously.
  • Owns eleven houseplants and has named exactly one of them, Deborah.
  • Keeps a note in his phone titled 'verses for 2am.'
