Writer
Maya Ellison
Maya writes about prayer and the everyday habits that make faith feel steady instead of overwhelming. She is drawn to quiet-morning routines, honest questions, and scripture that meets people right where they are. Most of her pieces start from one simple idea: you do not need the perfect words to begin.
Maya grew up in a noisy household of five, where she learned early that the only quiet she could count on was the hour before everyone else woke up. She studied English, waited a lot of tables, and spent her twenties helping lead a 6am prayer group in the back room of a neighborhood coffee shop. She started writing when a friend asked her to send 'that thing you always say about starting small,' and she has been writing about prayer and daily habits for close to a decade since. She is convinced that faith is mostly built on ordinary Tuesdays.
Writes from a small apartment in Portland, Oregon, usually before sunrise.

A few things about Maya
- Writes her first draft by hand, in the same brand of cheap spiral notebook she has used since college.
- Has a rescue cat named Barnabas who sits on whatever she is trying to read.
- Cannot start writing until the coffee is made, even on the mornings she forgets to drink it.
- Keeps a jar of one-line prayers on index cards and pulls one at random on hard mornings.
- Rereads 'The Practice of the Presence of God' by Brother Lawrence about once a year.
- Runs a slow 5k most Saturdays and prays the whole way around the park.
