Summary: A curated list of 6 Bible verses about depression and heaviness — Psalm 34:17, Psalm 40:1-2, Psalm 3:3, Deuteronomy 31:8, 2 Corinthians 4:8-9, and Psalm 42:5 — each paired with a short reflection on what the verse offers for the seasons that take more than you have to give.
Some seasons are heavier than others. Depression can make ordinary tasks feel impossible and silence the parts of life that used to feel bright. Scripture does not pretend that weight is imaginary. It speaks to people who are cast down, stuck in the pit, and running on empty. These verses are a place to land when getting through the day takes everything you have.

Psalm 34:17
The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.
This verse does not promise instant relief. It promises that your cry is heard. When prayer feels like shouting into a void, this is a reminder that God is not deaf to the person who is still speaking, even in a whisper.
Psalm 40:1-2
I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.
The psalmist names the pit plainly: horrible, muddy, stuck. The movement is slow ("I waited"), but the direction is real. Feet on rock is not the same as everything being fixed overnight. It is solid ground under you again.
Psalm 3:3
But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.
When your head will not lift on its own, this image matters. God as the lifter of your head is not a command to perform cheerfulness. It is a picture of help coming from outside your own strength.
Deuteronomy 31:8
And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.
Moses spoke this to Israel facing an uncertain future. The promise is presence ahead of you and beside you, not the absence of hard days. You are not walking into what comes alone.
2 Corinthians 4:8-9
We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed.
Paul does not deny the pressure. He names it: troubled, perplexed, persecuted, cast down. The contrast is not "everything is fine" but "not destroyed." On the worst days, not destroyed can be enough to hold onto.
Psalm 42:5
Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.
The psalmist talks to his own soul, the way you might talk to yourself in the mirror on a gray morning. The question is honest. The answer is a decision to hope again, even before the feeling returns.
A note on real help
Scripture speaks to the soul, and it also makes room for human help. If depression is making it hard to function, reach out to someone you trust, a pastor, or a licensed counselor. Asking for help is not a failure of faith.
Keep one verse close
Pick one verse from this list and read it again tomorrow morning. A single verse, carried through a whole day, tends to settle deeper than six read once and set aside. If you want a place to build that rhythm, Devotional walks through a passage like this every morning, with a short reflection and one small action to carry with you.
