Bible Verses About Grief and Comfort

Scripture sits with grief and names it plainly, pointing to a God who stays close to the brokenhearted.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

Nearness is the promise here. God is described as close specifically because of the broken heart.

Matthew 5:4

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

One of the Beatitudes, and one of the more surprising ones. Mourning is placed here among the blessed conditions, not treated as a failure of faith to overcome.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.

Paul describes comfort as something that moves through a person, on to someone else. What is received in grief becomes something to offer later.

Psalm 147:3

He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.

A short verse with a physical image inside it: wounds that are bound up, tended to directly, not left to close on their own.

Revelation 21:4

And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

A promise set at the very end of scripture, describing an ending to grief itself. It does not ask grief to end sooner than it naturally does; it points to a day when it ends completely.
